Dehing-Patkai, the name comes from the Dehing river and the Patkai hills. Dehing River flows east to west of Assam and joins at Dehingmukh on the south bank of the Brahmaputra. On its path multiple waterways, canals and gorges broaden the channel of this river and from this the basic topography of this wildlife sanctuary is formed. Kumkum trees with red fruits, wild banana trees, ferns and huge palm species mimic a Jurassic environment. If the secretive Red-headed Trogon is like Houdini (the famous magician) of Dehing Patkai, then Brown Hornbill is the most sought after in a Hornbill lover’s list and Streaked Wren Babbler is a favorite of bird photographers and bird-watchers, especially the Wren Babbler lovers. If the White-winged Wood Duck shows itself then the heart beat of bird lovers will definitely start racing, the bird indeed has the beauty of a mermaid who dwells in still waters and definitely has a magnetic power hidden in its feathers, the bird weaves a web of enchantment. You may click images of this rare beauty as long as it wants to show itself, however sometimes this rare bird is so elusive that it escapes the keen eyes.
Dehing Patkai may not be a destination to visit round the year owing to the weather, but the mere mention of the name definitely causes a flow of emotions amongst seasoned bird watchers and photographers. A unique and wonderful landscape comprising of four layers, namely; Emergent, Canopy, Undergrowth and Forest Floor is home to several exotic and endemic species of birds. Be it a skulker having its residence within the reaches of inland water bodies - the White-winged Wood Duck or may be the rare Brown Hornbill which, other than in Nameri National Park, is seen most frequently in this sanctuary. Similar birds include Pale-capped Pigeon, Oriental Bay Owl, Ruddy Kingfisher, Blue-eared Kingfisher etc. A rich forest with exotic wildlife and particularly birds, Dehing Patkai is like a generous host that offers something for everyone.
