Greater Adjutant Stork and Green Oscar

Birds are magnificent creature and there are many people around the world whose good wishes are keeping the avian fauna alive. Among those silent people with great virtues - Purnima Devi Burman is one of those who relentlessly worked to save Greater Adjutant Stork. Due to her effortless conservation work on the species, she has won the Green Oscar for the year 2017.

Previously we from GoingWild had conducted some birding tours Kaziranga National Park and some lesser known parts of Assam. Guwahati garbage dump is one of those place where sighting of this magnificent creature is almost confirmed. Though historical distribution shows its territory in lower gangetic plains as well, however, due to shrinkage in population now the entire species of Greater Adjutant Stork is range restricted to north-east India only.

In March 2017, according to schedule our Bhutan bird watching tour was supposed to end at Guwahati; when participants had two three hours of buffer time in hand; they urged for Greater Adjutant Stork, and we from our side did our best by arranging the logistics support for sighting of this avian beauty. Also during my recent tour to Pobitora and Deepor Beel in Assam, I have listed almost 70+ species during a day long birding and listed Greater Adjutant Stork as well in the list.
